Ahoy young sailors! We are diving deep to spotlight the octopus – a sneaky, squishy sea creature who is full of surprises. I bet you already know that an octopus has eight arms, but did you know the octopus can change colors to blend into the ocean like a superhero?
Whether it’s hiding from a hungry shark or sneaking up on a tasty crab, this clever critter is a sailing ship’s sneaky neighbor under the waves.
Superhero or Sea Creature?
- Inky Escape: If danger comes near, an octopus squirts a cloud of black ink and zooms away – its own smokey getaway trick! (hmmm – maybe octopuses REALLY ARE SUPERHEROS!)
- Brainy Buddy: Octopuses are super smart. They are escape artists. They escape from fish tanks and some have even escaped from jars in labs. They are like little ocean detectives. They have even learned to use tools like carrying a coconut around to hide in. They have been known to carry rocks to block the entrance to their caves.
- Keep an Eye on Them: Believe it or not, an octopus can fit through almost any opening. Their only size limit? They have to be able to get their eyeballs through. If the hole is greater than the size of their eyes, they can squeeze through it!
- Three Hearts: That’s right! An octopus has three heats pumping away. Two move blood past its gills to breathe underwater, and one keeps its body going.
- Regrow and Arm: Even our greatest superheroes can’t do that! If an octopus loses an arm to a sneaky predator, it can grow a new one. If they lost all eight… well, that would be a problem.
- Jet Speed: An octopus can turn on its after-burners like a jet plane. It swims by sucking in water and blasting it out through a tube called a siphon. Zoom – it’s like a rocket in the sea.
Where to Spot Them
You can look for octopuses near coral reefs, rocky hideouts, or napping on sandy ocean floors. It’s not easy to spot them because they will change their color to blend into their environment. You have to be a good detective to tell the difference between the rocks and the sleeping octopus disguised as a rock!
And if you see a coconut shell moving along the bottom of the sea floor – don’t panic! It’s probably just an octopus taking his hideout with him.
Sailor’s Challenge
Did you know there are over 300 different species of octopuses in the ocean? Some are tiny enough to fit in your hand, while others are as big as a car!
🦑 Your Challenge: Imagine you’ve just discovered a brand-new species of octopus! What does it look like? What special powers does it have? Does it change colors? Glow in the dark? Maybe it has extra-long arms or super-speed!
Draw a picture of your octopus and give it a name. Then, write a few sentences about where it lives and what makes it unique.
