Hello, young adventurers! We’re sailing through the Galapagos Islands, one of the most special places on Earth! These islands are like a treasure chest full of unique animals, cool history, and a climate that’s totally different from anywhere else. Let’s dive in and explore why the Galapagos are so awesome!
A Super Cool History! 📜
The Galapagos Islands were formed millions of years ago by volcanoes popping up from the ocean floor. They’re located in the Pacific Ocean, far from any other land, which made them a secret hideout for animals and plants to grow in their own special way. In 1835, a famous scientist named Charles Darwin visited the islands. He studied the animals here and learned how they adapted to their homes, which helped him come up with big ideas about how life on Earth changes over time. That’s why the Galapagos are called a “living laboratory”!

Animals You’ll Only Find Here! 🦎🐦
The Galapagos is home to some of the coolest creatures, and many of them live nowhere else in the world! Here are a few: You can click on the animal name to see a video of each animal,
- Giant Tortoises: These huge turtles can live over 100 years and are so big you could almost ride them (but don’t—they’re protected!).
- Watch a video of Dan and Alison visiting the old volcanoes and giant tortoises on the island of Santa Cruz! Click here.
- Marine Iguanas: These are the only lizards that swim in the ocean. They dive for seaweed snacks and sneeze salt out of their noses!
- Blue-Footed Boobies: These funny birds have bright blue feet and do a silly dance to show off.
- Galapagos Penguins: Yup, penguins live here! They’re the only penguins that live right on the equator.
- Flightless Cormorants: These birds forgot how to fly, but they’re super speedy swimmers.
There are also tons of fish, sharks, and sea lions that love splashing around the islands!
Protecting This Special Place 🌎
The Galapagos Islands are so unique that people work hard to keep them safe. Most of the islands are part of a national park, and only a few people can visit at a time. There are rules like “don’t touch the animals” and “stay on the trails” to make sure we don’t disturb nature. Scientists and rangers watch over the islands to protect the animals and clean up any trash. They even help baby tortoises grow up safe before letting them roam free!
A Wacky Climate! ☀️🌧️
The Galapagos Islands sit right on the equator, which means they’re in the middle of the Earth! You’d think it would be super hot all the time, but it’s not. The islands have a unique climate because of cold ocean currents that flow through. From June to December (our summer), it’s cooler and often rainy or misty—this is called the garúa season. From January to May (our winter), it gets warmer and sunnier. These currents bring chilly water from deep in the ocean, which keeps the islands cooler than you’d expect!
Why So Many Marine Animals? 🌊🐠
Those ocean currents aren’t just cold—they’re like a superhighway for sea creatures! The Humboldt Current brings cold water from the south, and other currents mix in warm water from the north. This makes the Galapagos waters a big party for fish, whales, dolphins, and even hammerhead sharks!

The currents carry yummy nutrients that feed tiny plants and animals called plankton, and those bring in bigger fish and marine life. That’s why snorkeling here feels like swimming in a giant aquarium!
Why Are the Galapagos So Special? ✨
The Galapagos Islands are like a magical place where animals, plants, and people live together in a special way. They teach us how important it is to take care of our planet. Whether it’s the giant tortoises munching on grass, the playful sea lions surfing the waves, or the crazy climate that flips our seasons, the Galapagos is a one-of-a-kind adventure!
